It was initially known as Newark and served as the first capital of Upper Canada (now Ontario) from 1792 to 1797.

Niagara-on-the-Lake is renowned for its well-preserved architecture, with many buildings having been built in the early 19th century. The town's heritage district features picturesque streets lined with charming buildings, shops, restaurants, and galleries.
