Ronald Boaks

I have been exhibiting professionally since first appearing in a cross-country survey show, Forum 76, in Montreal in 1976 and the AGH survey show Ontario Now, in 1997. More recently I was represented by the Moore Gallery in Toronto and, lately, I have participated in shows at the Mann Gallery in St. Catharine’s and the Niagara-on-the-Lake Pumphouse Arts Centre.

There are many dualities in my life: I am both a Romantic and a Modernist. My visual interests include the two and three-dimensional. I work with black and white as well as with vibrant colour and I delight in both abstraction and realism. My two-dimensional work includes painting, collage and photography and my sculptures are assemblies made from a variety of materials including metal, wood and clay.

My objectives have been very consistent over my professional career – beauty, balance, desire and humour are ongoing themes in my work.

If I had to reduce this to one sentence, it would be “I love the simple complexity of putting together the many elements of interest from my life.” I look for balance between the primitive and sophisticated, and seek inspiration in beauty, most often through the female form or landscape.

“Simply put, art needs to be alive in the present - when you look at it. It should evoke pleasure. It is a physical expression of mind and spirit.

Let yourself be drawn in, perhaps by the colour, or the texture, or the balance of the composition. Experience the delight.”
