Molly Yimlei Yep

Canadian artist Molly Yimlei Yep was trained as an architect at McGill University and has worked in that profession for over two decades.

Although she received her MBA, she was always an artist. She studied ceramics full-time at Goldsmiths College in London, England. Now she works in clay, soapstone and painting in both Eastern and Western styles. Her home and studio with a gas kiln are in beautiful Niagara-on-the-Lake.

Always active, she enjoys teaching Taiji-Flow to seniors at the NOTL community centre and Architectural Drawing by Hand at Willowbank School of Restoration Arts in Queenston Village.

“I always enjoyed creating in three dimensions, whether it is a building or a sculpture. I found I have a natural affinity for clay, especially porcelain, which is such a beautiful material.

The ancient Chinese developed celadon and copper-red glazes on porcelain which I can replicate firing in reduction in my personal gas kiln.

My work in clay has been mainly sculptural - mainly one of a kind. I use all clay techniques: throwing, handbuildling with slabs and coils, and slipcasting in plaster moulds which I make.

All my clay work is vessel-based and hollow, never solid clay. I am fascinated by the chemistry of glazes. I formulate and test glazes from scratch for mid and high-temperature firings.

I love challenges and started to work more in soapstone because the process is the reverse of clay-making. It is a subtractive process which is very intriguing. Painting and Taiji I do for relaxation.”
