Lynne Gaetz
Lynne Gaetz is a visual artist based in Niagara-on-the-Lake, Ontario. Originally an oil painter, she began integrating mixed media, words, gold and silver leaf, and even pieces of wood and stone in her work.
Her figurative paintings have surreal and mystical elements, and feature people with horns, antlers, and extremely tall hats. Additionally, she creates fantasy landscapes with collage and occasionally abstract works.
Many different elements have contributed to her artistic direction: She has studied art at universities in Calgary, Quebec City, Montreal, and Shantiniketan, India. Additionally, her travels to places such as Mexico, Turkey, Kenya, Morocco, and Chile have influenced her colour palette.
She continues to learn, taking workshops, conversing with other artists, and challenging herself to risk new directions. She has exhibited in galleries in Alberta, Quebec, and Ontario, and her work is in several private collections.
“In my recent work, I love to incorporate materials that reflect the light, such as tiles, old pieces of metal moulding, sea glass, and gold and silver leaf.
During the hours that I spend painting, music and colour embrace me and make me love the piece of the world I am presenting: the person, back turned, who is deep in thought; the bird in flight; the trees consumed by rising waters; the confident man in a very tall hat; the winged woman who has fallen to earth. Most of my paintings are done in oils, with an underpainting of acrylic. I often incorporate mixed media images, usually of my own photos or artwork. In recent ‘dreamscapes’, I've added sea glass, tiles, and stones to the piece.”
