Cathy Cullis
Cathy is a representational artist working almost exclusively in the pastel medium. Her impressionistic scenes often depict a particular viewpoint of a scene with a focus on the play of shapes, the patterns of light, line or movement.
“I have always been fascinated by the beauty and strength of the natural world so it’s not surprising that my subject of choice is primarily landscape. In each of my paintings, I try to interpret what it was about this particular scene that caught my eye or invoked some emotional response. Nature reaches out to us in so many ways, whether it is through sunlit clouds, wind-blown trees, majestic mountains, quiet streams or crashing waves. It is all just so real and it can be comforting to connect with that reality even for just a moment.”
Cathy has attained Master status with PastelArtists.ca (PAC) and is a 'Master Circle' member with the International Association of Pastel Societies (IAPS). She is an Elected member of the Society of Canadian Artists, a Signature member of the Pastel Society of Eastern Canada (PSEC) and is an Active member of the Federation of Canadian Artists (FCA).
As well as two solo exhibitions her work has appeared over the years in many exhibitions hosted by the the above art societies. She contributes annually to both the Dundas School of Art (DVSA) fundraising events, The Little Black Frame and the Annual Art Auction. Her work has also appeared in the Pelham Art Festival.
“Pastel is such a beautiful medium to work in and the immediate and expressive nature of the medium was captivating for me.
I love the tactile, hands-on nature of the medium. No collecting or mixing of materials before starting a painting. I can simply pick up a pastel stick and begin. Using a variety of pastel strokes, colour and value choices, a painting comes to life, hopefully pulling the viewer into the scene to enjoy the same emotional connection that initially captured my attention.”
